OverviewAt a time when complex environmental problems are
emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff,
capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology
innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national

and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect
the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to
developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes
for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new
approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division
capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including
Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and
Nuclear Energy.In the Irradiation Sciences Group, we focus on
detecting the transport of radioactive materials across borders and
on conducting precise irradiations and measurements to study the
effects of radiation dose on humans, equipment, and nuclear power
reactors. We are based in the 318 Building, also known as the
Radiological Exposures and Metrology (REM) Laboratory. Our core
capabilities include field testing, radiation testing,
calibrations, irradiations, and radiation measurement. This mission
is conducted with radiation generating devices and sealed sources
dedicated to researching and applying specialized technologies,
including highly-calibrated neutron and gamma irradiation
capabilities-some of these capabilities are not available or
licensed anywhere else in the United States.ResponsibilitiesThe
Irradiation Science Group is seeking an outstanding Technologist to
provide support to the Radiation Measurements and Irradiations
(RMI) Service Center located in the 318 Building. The position
includes operation of various Radiation Generating Devices (RGDs)
and irradiators to calibrate instruments, dosimeters, radiological
source handling in association with calibration efforts, and
instrument troubleshooting.Required to calibrate radiological
instruments per procedure and develop the procedures. The candidate
duties include:
- Provides oversight of technicians. Leads mentoring and training
of senior technician staff and supports identification of
succession candidates. Inspires commitment and grows the skills of
others.
- Skillfully performs technical procedures ranging from routine
to specialized, under technical supervision.
- Identifies and leads efforts to develop new procedures and
methods for complex, non-routine irradiated materials
research.
- Independently perform data collection and reduction and
maintain proper documentation.
- Design, set up, test, and operate test
equipment/instruments.
- Lead technical tasks and subtasks.
- Work with radioactive, non-radioactive and hazardous materials
on the benchtop and in fume hoods and glove boxes.
- Work with sealed radioactive sources and irradiator
systems.
- Assist in the design, building and operation of experimental
systems, conduct analysis/data collection, and assist in data
reduction and reporting.
- Be expected to perform physical and/or analytical measurements
following strict QA/QC protocols.
- Train, guide, and mentor junior technical staff.
- Be given primary responsibility for selected duties such as
waste management and chemical inventories.
- Internal and external networking.
- Performing RGD/Irradiator operations per procedure.
- Performing radiological instrument calibrations per
procedure.
- Performing sealed source transfers per procedure.
- General knowledge of radiation physics, instrumentation, and
dosimetry.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED and 12 years of relevant experience

- Technical Institute Graduate/relevant AA degree and 10 years of
relevant experience -OR-
- BS/BA in science or engineering and 8 years of relevant
experience -OR-
- MS/MA in science or engineering and 6 years of relevant
experience -OR-
- PhD with 4 years of relevant experiencePreferred
Qualifications:
- Experience working with radiological materials and/or sealed
radioactive sources
- Radiation worker qualified
- Experience with radiation detection instrumentation
