OverviewThe Physical Sciences Division seeks a Group Leader (GL)
for the Materials Sciences group, a diverse, multi-disciplinary
basic and applied research group of -60 staff members and
postdoctoral research associates. We synthesize and characterize
functional materials classes such as biologically inspired,
structural, and electronic materials, and materials for energy
capture, conversion, and storage. We seek outstanding candidates to
lead this collaborative group and directly contribute to this
research! Our overarching goal is to develop a predictive
understanding of the physical principles that connect atomic-scale
interactions to the behavior of ensembles of atomic and molecular
species. This knowledge is transformed into predictive synthesis of
complex nanostructured materials with controlled dimensionality,
architectures, and functionalities over multiple length
scales.ResponsibilitiesYour responsibilities will be split nearly
evenly between managerial duties (45%) and contributions to
peer-reviewed research (55%). In the managerial role, you will
provide leadership that will advance materials science broadly at
PNNL. You will work with Lab Leadership to set the agenda for
materials research directions at PNNL! You will also provide
excellent management of a productive and influential research
organization and elevate the efficiency and impact of the
group.Ensuring ongoing research programs in the group are
productive and impactful is crucial. Maintaining effective
operations including the management of overhead budgets to achieve
operational targets is a key part of the role. We value mentoring
and staff development. The ideal candidate will embrace
facilitating proposal writing and identifying research
opportunities for staff.Scientific expectations include leading and
contributing to fundamental peer-reviewed materials research.
Active collaborations with research staff across Group and Division
organizations in the Physical and Computational Science Directorate
and across the Lab are encouraged. We will expect you to quickly
establish yourself as an independent principal investigator (PI)
through collaborative proposals.Established nationally as an expert
in at least one S&E domain. Establishing new approaches at a
national level and advancing state of the art concepts. Conceives,
plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on
scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable
leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across
programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution
of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across
organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the
laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self
and project teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and
security. Contributes to directorate level or lab level operational
improvement activities.Qualifications
- BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
- MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
- PhD with 5+ year of relevant experiencePreferred
Qualifications:
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a
related field.
- An extensive publication list.
- Project/program/line management experience.
- Proven track record of strong leadership skills, scientific
talent, team-building and motivational skills, and strong written
and oral communication skills.
- Experience in operating laboratory facilities.
- A strong record of scientific accomplishments in an area
related to materials science research, including a significant
publication history and a history of attracting
funding/grants.
- Prior experience with the DOE and other government
