General Summary of Position The Director of Nursing Research
serves in a joint role with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital
(MGUH) and Georgetown University School of Nursing (GUSON). This
position includes an academic appointment in the GUSON with 50%
dedicated effort to academic responsibilities associated with that
appointment. Non-tenure track academic rank will be commensurate
with qualifications. The Incumbent leads the development of a
Nursing Research Program that supports the mission, vision, and
goals of both institutions as they collaborate to further Nursing
practice through the development and dissemination of new
knowledge. An environment of evidence-based practice application is
supported and expanded through collaboration with nursing staff,
nursing leaders, and other healthcare disciplines within both
institutions and the community. Role models and supports
professional practice and lifelong professional development.
Contributes to strategic and operational plans and initiatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains a strategic program of research
activities, including input from relevant stakeholders, that guides
nursing inquiry and dissemination of research.
- Promotes a culture of scholarly inquiry through user-friendly
education and accessibility to nurses in both organizations.
- Mentors early career nurse scientists, practitioners, clinical
nurses, and others in the development and implementation of
research projects, including identification of research questions,
review of the literature, development of proposals, proposal
review, implementation, and dissemination of findings.
- Develops and expands methods and resources for collecting,
analyzing, and interpreting data and information needed to conduct
research including library resources, databases, data collection,
institutional review of proposals, statistical support, software
applications, and information technology. Facilitates collaboration
among nurses and other health care disciplines in the conduct of
research activities.
- Disseminates knowledge through internal and external
publications and conference presentations. Provides education and
guidance for nurses on the evaluation and translation of research
through innovative programs.
- Collaborates with nursing leaders to assess the learning needs
of nurses related to research. Mentors nursing leaders and clinical
nurses to evaluate and apply evidence in their practice
responsibilities, including Department of Nursing standards of
care, standards of practice, policies and procedures, models of
care, quality improvement, and staff development programs.
- Contributes expertise and mentorship in the development of
nurse led, interdisciplinary research and scholarship. Serves as a
Collaborative Governance liaison/chair for the MGUH Research and
Evidence-Based Practice Council.
- Mentors, recognizes, and rewards nurses' professional
scholarship activities, particularly presentations and
publications. Establishes and maintains effective relationships and
working agreements with key research partners, including staff and
administration within MGUH and GUSON, Institutional Review Boards,
academic institutions, and other external research-based
organizations.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal, oral, written, and
electronic communication skills. Manages financial resource needs
and sources of support for evidence-based practice and research
activities, including internal and external funding to support
evidence-based practice and research activities. Assures program of
research supports ANCC Magnet Program requirements.
- Leads inter- and intra- disciplinary research teams in both
institutions. Leads and/or collaborates with other professionals,
including GUSON faculty and MGUH clinicians, in securing grant
funds for research conduct or other related initiatives.
- Teaches and advises graduate (PhD, DNP) and/or undergraduate
students and participates in the development and evaluation of
nursing curricula.
- Serves on PhD dissertation committees and DNP project
teams.
- Participates in GUSON governance activities (e.g., Executive
Faculty, Operations Committee, Committee on the Advancement of
Nursing Scholarship (CANS), Faculty Development

Qualifications Education
- Doctoral degree Research doctorate (PhD or EdD) in Nursing or
relevant field required Experience
- 5-7 years of progressively responsible job related experience
that demonstrates a record as an effective leader, educator, and
clinician, with a record of research/evidence based practice
scholarship, including external presentations and publications
required
- Academic experience preferred Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State
Licensure in the District of Columbia required
- Certification in area of specialty within 1 Year required
- Certification in nursing administration by a nationally
recognized nursing organization within 1 Year required This
position has a hiring range of $118,331 - $230,172
